Morning routines for long journey commuters
Is it me or is advice on creating a morning routine assume that a person has hours of time before they need to get to work. For those of us that have long commutes, starting the day with exercise, followed by meditation and several other activities just isn’t practical.
Practical, practical, practical
For busy commuters a morning routine needs to be practical. It is about doing the basics:
personal hygiene
what we wear and take with us.
Yes, it might be possible to get up earlier but for many of us long distance morning commuters we already are up early. Any earlier and we would need to go to bed as soon as we get home in the evenings! I’d love to add exercise in my morning on a long commute day but in reality, walking to and from the train station is the only exercise I do.
Your night routine can help make your mornings easier
What you have to do in the morning depends on what you do in your night routine. Things I do the night before to make my morning easier include:
Have clothes ready the night before
Make a lunch
Pack a bag
Have my coat and shoes by the front door.
Learning and reading
Reading and learning every day is a good thing to do. It may be possible if you catch a bus or train. If you drive podcasts and audio books can be good as long as they don’t affect your concentration.
Not every minute needs to be productive - maybe the morning train commute does have some scrolling the internet time or listening to music or thinking about life.
Set your intention for the day
Whether at home or on your journey, it is a good idea to include thinking about your day as either part of morning routine or the night before. What is key to do at work today? What are your appointments? What are you doing after work?
For busy commuters’ morning routines need to recognize that time can be scarce so being organized and only putting in the key things into the routine are likely to be important. Start your morning well by using the night before to do as much as possible.
In practice, for those of us with long commutes our morning routine is best focused on the basics and making sure the night before we have as much done as we can.
